10 Spring 2022 S ince it was established by NJAMHAA in 2000, the New Jersey Mental Health Institute (NJMHI) developed many programs that benefit NJAMHAAmembers. These initiatives included conferences that built providers’ cultural competencies; policy recommendations that led to the establishment of cultural competence training centers at the Center for Family Services and Family Connections; and development of resources to enhance services for the Hispanic population. With its ongoing focus on strengthening the mental healthcare and substance use services field, NJMHI has created a Leadership Academy for Behavioral Healthcare Professionals that will be launched later this year. The goal of the Leadership Academy is to provide opportunities for up-and-coming leaders (mentees) to transition into new roles with increased responsibilities and career paths, thereby reinforcing staff retention and strengthening New Jersey’s behavioral healthcare system for the near- and long-term future. Each mentee will work with a mentor (a current behavioral healthcare leader) and a coach (a leader who may work in a different industry) for a 12-month period. Applications are due June 15, 2022 and the program for the first cohort will begin in September 2022.
